Noah’s Arc…tic? Norway has chosen a remote Arctic island to house a Global Seed Vault. The storage unit is intended to safeguard three million seed varieties in case of a world catastrophe. The seeds will be packaged in foil and stored at temperatures cold enough to ensure that they could last thousands of years, and will ensure the survival of crop diversity in the event of plant epidemics, nuclear war, natural disasters or climate change, and could give the world a chance to reintroduce crops that get wiped out.

And if that doesn’t sound enough like something from a science fiction story, the Norwegians hope that the island’s polar bears, well known for their ferocity, will provide the vault with some free security patrols.
