Dear Minister Baird:

Re: Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Canadians are saying loud and clear: a lot more needs to be done to protect our environment from the effects of global warming due to climate change.

I ask that this Government demonstrate its commitment to fighting the effects of climate change by immediately implementing measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Industry as a whole accounts for roughly half of Canada's greenhouse gas emissions and its contribution to the effort to reduce emissions should be in line with its contribution to the problem. Mandatory greenhouse gas reductions by industry must be a fair share of the reductions that Canada as a whole has to make by 2012 under the Kyoto Protocol.

Emissions targets on industry must apply no later than 2008. We cannot delay regulations for 50 years while the effects of climate change grow worse every day.

I urge this Government to be a leader in addressing the greatest environmental challenge we face today, and to pursue a strong, credible response to the climate crisis.
