According to recent news reports, Environment Canada is severely slashing the budgets of key wildlife monitoring programs that help us better understand climate change:

  • The Migratory Bird Program, which monitors the health of bird populations, has been cut by over 40%
  • The Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Network, which observes changes in ecosystems, has been cut by over 70%
  • A service budget freeze at the Canadian Wildlife Service for the rest of the fiscal year, will effectively halt all scientific field and survey work.

Canada’s wildlife programs and services help in the fight to slow or adapt to global warming. Without them, Canada’s wildlife, both common and endangered, face a bleak future. Speak out now!

Monitoring plant and animal populations, especially birds, is a proven method for recognizing the effects of climate change, and forecasting what’s to come for humans. Canadians have said loud and clear that global warming is the most profound issue facing us today. Now is not the time for cuts to our wildlife service!

Send a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Environment Minister John Baird, calling for a fully funded, fully supported Environment Canada and Canadian Wildlife Service that can:

- Ensure healthy populations of migratory birds
- Establish and maintain a protected area network from coast to coast
- Monitor and protect endangered wildlife
- Provide realistic solutions to slow or adapt to climate change
- Maintain the quality of our air and water
- Protect native ecosystems from invasive species
- Keep our international commitments
