Save Suffield National Wildlife Area

“If a protected area that conserves 14 of Canada’s species at risk is not safe from industrial development, then what is?” - Julie Gelfand, President of Nature Canada.

Suffield National Wildlife Area near Medicine Hat, Alberta is home to 14 species of plants and animals at risk of extinction in Canada. Don’t let it become home to 1,275 shallow gas wells and 220km of pipeline!

Just two years after the Government of Canada established the NWA within the Canadian Forces Base at Suffield, the last remaining large intact piece of pristine prairie grasslands in Canada is threatened by this proposed drilling project. If the drilling permit is granted it would set a chilling precedent, calling into question the validity of the National Wildlife Area system.

On April 25, 2006 the federal government announced that an independent review panel would be called to assess the environmental impact of drilling in Suffield National Wildlife Area. But the area is not safe yet!

Please sign our petition today and do your part to protect Suffield’s undisturbed grasslands, sand hills, river breaks and wetlands.

Please read the letter that will be sent to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, then sign the petition:

Subject: CEAR 05-05-15620 Shallow Gas Proposal in National Wildlife Area - Suffield, AB

Dear Prime Minister:

I support Environment Minister Rona Ambrose's announcement of a full environmental assessment of the shallow gas drilling project proposed for the Canadian Forces Base Suffield National Wildlife Area (NWA) in Alberta. But I remain deeply concerned about the fate of Suffield, because its fate is linked to those of all our National Wildlife Areas.

The NWAs were created with the intent to protect our species at risk. If drilling is allowed, it would set a dangerous precedent, opening the door for development in other NWAs across Canada.

That is why we must protect Suffield's fragile ecosystem and the life it supports, including 14 species at risk in Canada. I am urging you to fulfill your commitment to Canada's endangered species, and demonstrate that you will permanently protect all of our country's desginated National Wildlife Areas.

I look foward to your reply.
